Backstory

Mercury was born in Miami, Florida alongside his twin brother Hermes to a mother who he barely knows. He grew up not knowing much about her, one of them being the fact that she was the one who named them Mercury and Hermes after the Roman and Greek god.

His mother disappeared at a young age, too young for the twins to remember much, if anything at all about her. Their father claimed that she died in a car crash. (Even if years later Mercury couldn’t find any trace of that death or recorders of his mother.) A few months after the disappearance the family moved up from Florida towards the state of Maine. To a house near the Canadian border, located near a small town. He claimed that they would all be safe there for a long time. He joked that if anything went wrong, they could all take their passports and hop over to Canada, because maybe then the USA Government wouldn’t be able to hunt them down then.

Mercury and Hermes grew up homeschooled by their father, enjoying the ability to go at their own pace compared to the state of the school near them. They both blazed through their school work and spent most of the time on the computer, messing with it, Both fascinated by the machinery and the things it could do.

While growing up, Mercury and Hermes both noticed that their father was strange, very strange. He went off and worked non-stop at something, the two twins had no clue at the time. Even when their father spent his time either homeschooling them, or working on something, he always put time to hang out with them. Not for school. Not for work. But to be a father. One of the main hobbies, other than helping them with learning technology, was watching movies and shows. They own a large storage of different movies and shows. All illegally obtained. Along with a large storage of illegal movies and shows, they also own a giant storage of different video games.

If asked, Mercury would confirm that yes, Minecraft is the only video game he can remember purchasing with money. If only he got interested in it a few months prior because then maybe he wouldn’t have had to pay for it at all.

Mercury and Hermes continued to grow up, and while doing so noticed that their father was in fact working on something, and that something caught both of their child brains. They both started to crack a plan to figure it out, a plan that got caught right away by their father. He wanted to protect them, afraid that the two young teenagers that he watched and cared for would get harmed by being careless. Yet. He knew children, he knew he did it himself when he was young. Their curiosity would be something he wouldn’t be able to fight against, and they could get more hurt than if he taught them.

So, while keeping the main thing he was working on a secret, their father taught them what he knew about aspects. How they took up the core building blocks of the universe. Who needed atoms when there was something else. While he taught them about what truly made up the universe he also taught them that there are people who do not want this information to get out. That the information was powerful, but dangerous in the wrong hands. He knew that his kids wouldn't be able to go online to spread that information. They both preferred to tinker with technology or run outside in the woods.

The twins caught on quickly that maybe there was a reason why they moved to a remote area near a quiet town. That maybe there was more to the world and how it worked. They both were thrilled to know that there was something out in the world that they can explore themselves, together. Despite their hunger for knowledge, the information their father gave them wasn’t enough to start anywhere, only to think of the posabilities.

They continued to grow. While growing up Mercury began to learn more about programming, about engineering, how to beat kids in bedwars ( important ), about aspects, how to speedrun in a block game ( very important ), and more. Even one-day Mercury and Hermes worked together to allow their dad to get them a cat. It didn’t take much work, and soon they got a gray maine coon who they named Cobblestone. Mercury and Hermes didn’t have a lot of friends to hang around in real life, only knowing a few people from the nearby town, but they partly didn’t mind growing up. Both were happy with what they had, even if that was terabits of illegally downloaded material, a father that tried his best to be there for them, a fluffy large cat, and each other. Sure they got into fights once in a while, but they always knew how to fix it because they didn’t want to be mad at each other.

As time passed, their father started to get more paranoid, more worried. The twins picked up that maybe something wrong was happening. Maybe the thing that their father was trying to work on was connected to what was going wrong, or maybe it was something greater. Maybe it was connected to why people were disappearing.

The twins didn’t know until it was too late.

At first Mercury and Hermes were confused on why their father was absent for too long. While yes, some weeks he wasn’t able to sit down for family time but it wasn’t like he disappeared on them.

Then it silently clicked to them.

Their father was gone.

They were alone.

He wasn’t coming back.

The first few days felt unreal. Like it wasn’t happening. The silence hurt. It suffocated Mercury and his twin. It took them a few days to collect themselves, but once Mercury and Hermes remembered they had each other, things slowly started to go back to normal.

As normal as it could be.

A week later, Mercury and Hermes decided to try and figure out what happened to their father. Maybe even what happened to their mother. It all seemed… Off. That something was wrong and their father knew about it. Tried to protect them from it. A few days of roaming around, they stumbled upon the area their father was working at. An area secluded away from them, an area filled with research and most of all, a portal.

At first they had no clue what the research meant, only the fact that it dealt with the aspects. After a few months of studying together. They understood what their father was planning on doing. They understood what was happening around the world.

Their father was building a portal to another universe in hope to save the looming doom that Earth was starting to face. It would start small, and already started. Very slowly people were disappearing. Very slowly something was happening. Very slowly did the reality march towards what seemed to be its doom.

In the notes their father has left behind held the information about the other world. A world filled with a race and creatures unlike theirs. Animals covered in white and another race. A race with candy corn horns, gray skin, yellow eyes, and black hair. A race that each only used one single color, along with a symbol to match. It was fascinating to the twins, but frightening.

Now it was left to three things with their father’s disappearance. Their father was taken away by the rift, their father was somehow in the alien world, or the government finally caught up to him.

Mercury shifted his research towards one part of the alien world that stuck out to him the most. One part that even his father seemed to catch onto. In the other world they had access to something that seemed magical, something that seemed infused with their very being. If everything was connected, and the ones on the other side of the portal were anything remotely like humans. Wouldn’t humans be able to access this magic?

As he researched more he turned his study towards working on a staff that would be able to unlock that power. If aspects were building blocks, then with practice, wouldn’t humans be able to learn that same magic? Because maybe then he would be able to wield that to help save whatever was happening to earth. Maybe then they would be able to understand how the portal worked. Maybe then, if they could introduce the building blocks to teach humans magic, then they could introduce the building blocks to fix Earth. Maybe then he wouldn't have to lay in bed at night, staring at the wall with his minecraft frog plushie in arms. Wondering if things will be alright.

Day and night he worked on perfecting the staff. It was hard at first, but he slowly used the notes his father left him and what he knew about engineering and the world around him. Mercury tested and used the staff day and night, focused on getting it just right. Prototype after prototype it felt like he was getting closer to unlocking the ability to use what he dubbed as magic. At first while testing he figured out how to channel basic electricity, and following that, allowing his body to enhance his own eyesight.

continued to work on the staff, and as he did so, his body got used to using more psionics magic. His body soon was able to use illusions to help him out, and telekinesis to control the staff and basic throwing around. Once the prototype was stable, he went out to make Hermes one, knowing they both should have one just in case.

While Mercury worked on understanding the aspects and magic, Hermes shifted towards studying the portal and how the aspects of the world affected it. How he could use the magic to power up the portal and any other mechanical device. They both worked together, their research equaling helping each other achieve their goals.

Hermes learned from uncovering his father's research that the portal should technically be able to open in multiple places of the alien world where the connection between the two worlds were the closest. They have agreed that if they ever were to open it, and were not rushed to get out of the world, Mercury would go in. As he would be able to easily illusion himself to hide. Mercury also brought up that Hermes should also try and learn that magic as well, and has started to learn it. They both created what they believe would look like the aliens from their father’s notes.

Slowly they uncovered what remained of what their fathers left for them both. The both were not even adults and it felt like the world was doomed. It was hard for them to cope, but they tried their best to still enjoy life. Even if they knew there might not be a tomorrow. Mercury and Hermes still watched movies together, they still pirated any game that seemed interesting, and they still beat up kids in bedwars. It was hard sometimes, but like what Pitbull said, “Give me everything tonight, For all we know we might not get tomorrow.”
